Depending on a program you will need to pass test (such as SAT achievement test, GMAT, GRE, TOEFL) or obtain required certificates and references (preferably from professors of the university that you apply to or widely recognized researchers, sometimes organizations that student was actively working with) prior to applying. Please note that these examinations are run only few times a year and you need to check deadlines and start preparation for selected program even a year earlier.
